mop vs laws

i had a dream (1975)

downtown swinga (1996)

must be one year ago that a friend of mine sold me an old groovy vinyl i really adore: hubert laws chicago theme has some incredible flute solos trilling over solid funky beats!
then, some weeks ago, i bumped into premiers reprise of my favorite song on the lp: i had a dream with a tight clavinette-riff, arranged by the great bob james!

set you free

(yes, it really this the original cover!)
no joke, this song reminds me of falling in love for one of the first times in the mid-nineties! how cute! i still kind of like the drums and of course the energetic end-part starting around 2:30!
listen here, watch here, fall in love! haha! and also check out the remix by dave implex. defenitely updated, but the skip the first 3minutes.

visionaries vs. visionaries

by chance, i recently met a friend of mine with whom i kind of lost contact a few years ago. the first thing he said after "hi" was "i got something for you right here..!". strange. he rummaged around in his backpack and passed me an old cd i bought about 3 years ago when i met him at a visionaries concert. he basically should have kept it in his pack during the concert to hand it to me afterwards, but we both forgot it back then...
damn, the backback era was cool! and you can store things in there for 3 years or more!
you never know who you could cross today!
thanks furrer!

madlib is finally back to team up with an artist for a whole new album:
he (otis jackson) and mr. guilty simpson are dropping their collabo OJ SIMPSON this summer.
how long did we have to wait for a new hiphop meal out of stonesthrow's kitchen...

juice crew

just as an add to the cold chillin' tee post today to let you know who the famous juice crew is, i let them introduce themselves on the symphony. this legendary track – produced by marley marl and based on otis reddings song who's name i just forgot – features the whole juice crew line-up!
i don't know what you gone do with this, but it got to be fuuuunky!
(yeah: just found otis redding's "hard to handle" on youtube, also sampled by fünf sterne deluxe)

afrofuturism

rammellzee

sun ra, space is the place

wow! did a little research about this movement that must have started in the 70ies or so. didn't even find out. if you wanna know more about it, check afrofuturism.net. all i know is that it is about afro-americans and science fiction, expressed in music, art, film and literature and artists like sun ra, rammellzee or killah priest took part of it. (and madlib quoted/sampled sun ra on shadows of tomorrow)

beautiful covers: space

nice jacket!
disco funky music from 1978, vogue records.i wouldn't have thought it according to their boots, hairstyles and mr.moustache, but the sound is quite nice.
i'm not really into the cover design, but the type-backcover is cool!

nas and damian marley

YES! finally, after years of lack of really good music (after «nas is like» in about 2000, in my opinion), nas anounces an album with damian marley, which i remember from their featuring song «road to zion». should they reach to continue the energy and athmosphere they put on this political track, the album «distant relatives» should be a delightement for my ears! and yours too, hopefully!

dead of an icon

i admit that i've never been a big fan of michael jackson's music (at least not of his solo carreer), but anyway it was a quite strange feeling hearing that the king of pop passed away last night. ever since i'm a small child i heard the name of this music icon weekly, so he was just like part of my life and culture, as tv, game boy or migros... guess news won't break up in the following months or weeks, and as we're used to from departed musicians as elvis, biggie or jay dilla, we will have to face millions and tons of new releases, myseriously refound lost tapes, best ofs, and «buy the time life 12 cd-box with only the greatest hits of michael jackson and you'll get the other 12 FOR FREE»-tv-spots.
but for now:
let's take a sec and think back

do the right thing

clinton sparks and kardinal offishall bring us a headbanging summer fresh breeze of a hell of a mixtape, based on spike lee's classic joint do the right thing.
remixing the original soundtracks, enriched by remixes as crooklyn dodgers (from spike lee's "clockers") and other burning tracks mainly ripped by raps of mr. kardinal offishall.
damn it's hot!

Over the past year Animal has been building a pretty good relationship with Wu Tang, and were excited as hell to hear that Ghostface wanted to do a collab shirt with us before he went on tour. You can grab these at any Animal retailer or from Ghostface’s merch table while he is touring. (24.may at the rocking chair / vevey)
